Econet launches a Civil Servants Device credit Scheme

Econet has introduced a credit a 24 months credit scheme aimed at Civil Servants. Under the scheme Civil Servants can present an ID, payslip and proof of residence at an Econet Office and walk away with a smartphone. No deposit is required.

To sweeten the deal the device comes with “free” WhatsApp for 24 months i.e the duration of the contract. Currently only two devices are available the Samsung J110 (3G) and Huawei Y3 Lite. For these a civil servant is being asked to part with  $14.34 and $14.05 per month for 24 months respectively.

The devil is in the details

To be fair I think this is a raw deal. Neither phone is particularly mind blowing. In fact I would go so far as to say these two are outdated garbage phones. The Y3 Lite is a bit decent but it is not worth the $337 Econet is asking for it. It’s even possible neither device will support WhatsApp in 2020 when you get to pay the final installment.

Civil servants have options

If you are a civil servant you are better off going to GTel instead. They have better phones that are a bit pricey but are worth their prices in gold. If it were me I would stay away from these rubbish phones.
